"Steely McBeam" First Gay Mascot

by ballin32 (08/09/2007 - 17:51)

Steelers new team mascot, selected from among more than 70,000 entries. The winning entry, submitted by Diane Roles of Valencia, Pa., was announced Wednesday afternoon as part of the Steelers' 75th anniversary celebration at St. Vincent College. Roles will receive VIP tickets to the Steelers' Sept. 16 home opener against Buffalo along with a throwback helmet and jersey.

Stevie Steeler was the last Steelers mascot, from the mid-1980's to mid-'90s. The Pittsburgh Tribue-Review is reporting the Steelers mascot finally has a name: Steely McBeam. McBeam isn’t to be confused with Steelers DE Ryan McBean.

According
to the T-R:

The winning entry, submitted by Diane Roles of Valencia, Pa., was announced Wednesday afternoon as part of the Steelers’ 75th anniverary celebration at St. Vincent College. Roles will receive VIP tickets to the Steelers’ Sept. 16 home opener against Buffalo along with a throwback helmet and jersey.

And we certainly thank her for that. The surname “McBeam” reflects a rich, Irish heritage (not “Cowher with caterpillars on top of his eyes”), and likely is from upstate New York. While DHS wasn’t able to track down any official records of Steely’s ancestors (without giving some crack web site my email address), we did find all the information you would need if you were looking for the origin of McBain.  But this is probably all you need. Couldn’t he be our mascot instead? Either way, JJ Cooper sums it up perfectly:

Apparently Dopey McTool was taken.
